The Global Hunger Index
A yearly index by European charities that scores countries on hunger using four indicators; India has sat in the 'serious' band for years.
What the paper can ask
- Published by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) with the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) and Helvetas; first edition 2006. (as of 23 Oct 2026)
- Two of the four indicators carry one-third weight each and the other two one-sixth each.
- Bands: low (9.9 or below), moderate (10 to 19.9), serious (20 to 34.9), alarming (35 to 49.9), extremely alarming (50 and above).

GHI 2026 (released 14 October 2026, title 'No Security Without Food Security') ranked India 100th of 122 countries with a score of 24.1 ('serious', where India has sat since 2012).

India's rank, the total number of countries, the publisher and the four indicators are asked every October.
The full story
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is published every year, usually in October, by the German charity Welthungerhilfe with partners. It gives each country a score from 0 (no hunger) to 100 based on four indicators. Scores fall into five bands: low, moderate, serious, alarming and extremely alarming. India disputes its methodology each year.
