UPI, the e-rupee and India's fintech stack
India pays by phone: a shared real-time rail for bank transfers, a digital form of the rupee on trial, and other countries plugging in.
What the paper can ask

- UPI is accepted abroad through tie-ups such as Singapore's PayNow, the UAE, France and Bhutan, the first country to accept it. (as of 23 Oct 2026)
- The e-rupee was announced in the 2022 Budget; the wholesale pilot began 1 November 2022 and the retail pilot 1 December 2022; it is a tokenised digital rupee convertible at par with paper currency.
- From 1 April 2026 the 's authentication directions require at least two factors, one dynamic, for domestic digital payments; SMS OTP is no longer the only option.

Setters ask who operates UPI, who issues the e-rupee, launch dates, which countries accept UPI, and the host city of the Global Fintech Fest.
The full story
The Unified Payments Interface lets anyone move money between bank accounts instantly from a phone using an ID or QR code, free for person-to-person use. It was built on a shared rail owned by the banks and opened to apps from any provider, which is why it now carries most of India's digital payments. The e-rupee is different: it is money itself in digital form, not a payment app, and has been piloted since 2022 in wholesale and retail forms.
