What replaced MGNREGA
Updated 23 Oct 2026. MGNREGA was one of India's biggest welfare programmes and a staple of exam questions for two decades; its replacement resets every fact about it. The change also touches the Directive Principles (Article 41 on the right to work) and Centre-state cost sharing, and the first months of data gave both the government and its critics numbers to argue over.
MGNREGA and VB-G RAM G compared

| Guaranteed days a year | 100 | 125 |
| Average daily wage | Rs 298.8 | Rs 327.4 |
| Start | Launched 2 Feb 2006, Anantapur | Notified 21 Dec 2025; in force 1 Jul 2026 |
| Legal form | Act of 2005, renamed after Gandhi 2009 | Replaces the 2005 Act |
| Full name | Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act | Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) |
What an exam could ask
- The full form of VB-G RAM G and the number of guaranteed days (125, up from 100) could be asked directly.
- MGNREGA's history (2005 Act, 2006 launch at Anantapur, 2009 renaming) could be attached as background.
- Article 41 and the Directive Principles could be linked to a question on the right to work.
- Dates could be tested: notification on 21 December 2025 versus commencement on 1 July 2026.
- A statements question could use the 60-day seasonal pause and the 40 percent state share, as reported at enactment.
Angles to revise, not predictions.
What happened
Parliament passed the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill in mid-December 2025, and the Act was notified on 21 December after Presidential assent. It replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act of 2005 and raises the guarantee from 100 to 125 days of wage work per rural household a year, with payment in lieu if work is not given. As reported at enactment, states may pause work for up to 60 days a year in peak farm seasons and bear 40 percent of the cost. The Act came into force on 1 July 2026 with a national average daily wage of Rs 327.4 against Rs 298.8 earlier.
