The 2026 Nobel Prizes, laureate by laureate
Updated 23 Oct 2026. The Nobel list is asked nearly every year, usually as a match-the-pair item (laureate, field, country) or a question on the awarding bodies and cities. The 2026 Peace Prize also links to international law: the ICC, the Rome Statute, and India's position outside it. The prize amounts, the Economics prize's separate origin and the Indian laureates are standard background.
Nobel Prizes 2026, laureate by laureate
| Prize | Winner(s) | For |
|---|---|---|
| Medicine | Deisseroth, Hegemann, Nagel | Optogenetics |
| Physics | Francis Halzen | IceCube neutrinos |
| Chemistry | Henri Kagan, Kenso Soai | Asymmetric synthesis |
| Literature | Anne Carson | Poet, essayist, translator |
| Peace | Navi Pillay | Peace and international law |
| Economics | Robert Hall, Michael Woodford | Macroeconomic stabilisation |
What an exam could ask
- A match-the-pair question could be asked pairing each 2026 laureate with the field: Deisseroth, Hegemann and Nagel (Medicine), Halzen (Physics), Kagan and Soai (Chemistry), Carson (Literature), Pillay (Peace), Hall and Woodford (Economics).
- The Peace Prize winner's background (former ICC judge, former UN human rights chief), the US sanctions on the ICC the same day and the Sakharov Prize that followed could be asked, with the Rome Statute and India's non-membership as the legal hook.
- Which body awards which prize and in which city could be asked, including that the Peace Prize alone is given in Oslo, by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
- The Economics prize's 1968 origin and first winners, and the Indian laureates Sen and Banerjee, could be asked.
- The 2025 laureates (Machado for Peace, Krasznahorkai for Literature) could be asked as a previous-year comparison.
Angles to revise, not predictions.
What happened
The 2026 Nobel Prizes were announced between 5 and 12 October. Medicine went to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, which switches nerve cells on or off with light. Physics went to Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and high-energy cosmic neutrinos. Chemistry was shared by Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai for non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric synthesis. Canadian poet Anne Carson won Literature. South African jurist Navi Pillay, a former ICC judge and UN human rights chief, won the Peace Prize for promoting peace and international law; the United States announced new ICC sanctions hours later. Economics went to Robert Hall and Michael Woodford for macroeconomic stabilisation.
Words to know
- Who awards what
- Medicine: the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. Physics and Chemistry: the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Literature: the Swedish Academy. Peace: the Norwegian Nobel Committee, awarded in Oslo. The prizes were first awarded in 1901, under the will of Alfred Nobel, who died on 10 December 1896; the ceremonies are held on that date.
- Economics prize
- Established in 1968 by Sweden's central bank and not part of Nobel's will; first awarded in 1969 to Ragnar Frisch and Jan Tinbergen. Indian winners: Amartya Sen (1998) and Abhijit Banerjee (shared, 2019).
- Optogenetics
- A method that uses light-sensitive proteins called opsins to switch specific neurons on or off with light. Channelrhodopsin is the light-sensitive protein first identified in a single-celled alga.
- Neutrinos and IceCube
- Neutrinos are nearly massless, electrically neutral particles. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, at the South Pole, detects high-energy neutrinos from space.
- Chirality and autocatalysis
- Chirality: molecules that exist as mirror-image forms. Autocatalysis: a reaction whose product speeds up its own formation. The 2026 Chemistry prize concerns how one handedness can amplify in asymmetric synthesis.
- International Criminal Court
- Based at The Hague, set up by the Rome Statute of 1998 and functioning from 2002. India and the United States are not parties to the Rome Statute (as of October 2026). The US sanctioned the ICC's President in August 2026 and announced new sanctions on the day of the 2026 Peace Prize; the court then won the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize.
- Indian and India-linked laureates
- C.V. Raman won the Physics prize in 1930, the first Asian scientist to win a science Nobel; Mother Teresa won the Peace Prize in 1979; Amartya Sen (1998) and Abhijit Banerjee (2019) won the Economics prize.
- Ig Nobel Prizes
- Satirical science awards run by the Annals of Improbable Research; the 36th ceremony in September 2026 was held in Zurich, the first outside the US.
Full timeline
The 2025 prizes are presented; the Peace Prize goes to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, whose daughter accepts it in Oslo while she remains in hiding. The 2025 Physics prize had gone to John Clarke, Michel Devoret and John Martinis, and Literature to Laszlo Krasznahorkai
National Science Day marks the 1928 announcement of the Raman Effect; C.V. Raman won the Physics Nobel in 1930, the first Asian scientist to win a science Nobel
The United States sanctions ICC President Tomoko Akane and senior trial lawyer Abdoulaye Seye under a February 2025 executive order; the ICC calls it a flagrant attack on its independence
The 36th Ig Nobel Prizes, the satirical science awards, are held in Zurich, the first ceremony outside the United States, after organisers cite visa and safety concerns
Medicine: Karl Deisseroth (Stanford), Peter Hegemann (Humboldt University, Berlin) and Georg Nagel (University of Wurzburg) for light-gated ion channels and optogenetics; Hegemann and Nagel identified channelrhodopsin in an alga and Deisseroth turned it into a tool. Prize money 12 million Swedish kronor
Physics: Francis Halzen (Belgian-American) for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole and the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Chemistry: Henri Kagan (France, aged 95) and Kenso Soai (Tokyo University of Science, aged 76) share the prize equally for non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis, which explain how the handedness of molecules can amplify
Literature: Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson, 76, cited for work in playful dialogue with the classical tradition that created new forms for contemporary literature
Peace: Navanethem (Navi) Pillay of South Africa, former ICC judge and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, for promoting peace and international law; hours later the United States announces new sanctions on the International Criminal Court, saying the Nobel committee had shown support for institutions under attack
Economic Sciences: Americans Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford for models that help governments and central banks stabilise economies against shocks
The European Parliament awards the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the International Criminal Court and its officials, less than two weeks after the US sanctions announcement; ceremony in Strasbourg in December
