Bangladesh's election and Nepal's new prime minister

Updated 23 Oct 2026. Neighbourhood politics is a standing exam theme: who heads which government, which party won, and the dates. Both changes also carry background facts examiners like to attach, such as the size of each parliament, when Nepal became a republic, the 1950 India-Nepal treaty, how Bangladesh elects its President, and the UN post a Bangladeshi minister won in June.

What an exam could ask

  • The prime ministers of Bangladesh and Nepal, their parties and swearing-in dates could be asked, including Balen Shah's number as the 47th prime minister.
  • The seat counts (about 209 of 297 declared; 182 of 275) and the size of each parliament (300 elected seats; 275) could be asked as a numbers question.
  • Bangladesh's President and how the office is filled (elected by Parliament, Article 48) could be asked alongside the first contested election since 1991.
  • The President of the 81st UN General Assembly could be asked, with the 1986-87 precedent.
  • A statement-based question could be asked on the 1950 India-Nepal treaty, Nepal becoming a republic in 2008 and the honorary army-chief tradition.

Angles to revise, not predictions.

What happened

Two neighbours chose new governments in early 2026. Bangladesh voted on 12 February, its first election since the July 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina, with the Awami League barred. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party won about 209 of 297 declared seats on unofficial results, Jamaat-e-Islami won 68, its highest ever, and Tarique Rahman was sworn in as prime minister on 17 February. Nepal voted on 5 March, after the Gen Z protests of September 2025 toppled K.P. Sharma Oli's government. The Rastriya Swatantra Party won 182 of 275 seats and Balendra (Balen) Shah, a rapper and former Kathmandu mayor, became the 47th prime minister on 27 March, aged 35. In August Bangladesh's parliament elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir President.
